Former film critic Davide Ferrario (After Midnight) has written and directed this stylish and whimsical ensemble dramedy about three lively thirty to fortysomething housemates looking for love and life’s answers in the northern Italian city of Turin.
Ugo (Walter Leonardi) is a jobless intellectual who rides around on his bike, reading and profusely citing poet/philosopher Giacomo Leopardi, and lounging around the motley suburban house he inherited from his deceased parents. When he’s not brooding alone, he playfully chats up his two housemates: the zookeeper and aspiring writer, Dario (a handsome Eugenio Franceschini, also in this year’s The Taste of You and White Like Milk, Red Like Blood), and the romance-seeking travel agent, Maria (Manuela Parodi, Genova), whom Ugo is desperately trying to seduce. As the housemates’ deal with their existential crises, stunning imagery from the beguiling city of Turin creates a virtual sightseeing tour of the city, expertly captured by cinematographer Dante Cecchin.
