Written especially for popular actor and comedian Antonio Albanese, who personifies the film’s dark humour and underlying sense of triumphant hope, A Lonely Hero is the latest from Venice Golden Lion winning director Gianni Amelio (Stolen Children, The Way We Laughed).
Set in modern day Milan and seen through the eyes of kind, middle-aged Antonio Pane (Albanese, To Rome with Love, Days and Clouds) as he presents a Chaplinesque odyssey through the world of unskilled manual labour. Despite loneliness and personal family problems, particularly around his troubled musician son (handsome big-screen newcomer Gabriele Rendina), a determined Antonio is a jack-of-all-trades who takes on every conceivable temporary job, a different one every day, while somehow remaining defiantly optimistic, in what is ultimately an uplifting offering in a difficult time. Award-winning actress Sandra Ceccarelli (Light of my Eyes) is terrific in a cameo playing Antonio's ex-wife.
