Le meraviglie

5 out of 5 stars
The Telegraph UK

This 2014 Cannes Film Festival Grand Prix winner is an original and impressionistic family drama with Monica Bellucci and directed by Alice Rohrwacher (Corpo Celeste).

Nothing will be the same at the end of this summer for Gelsomina (first-time Romanian-Italian actress Alexandra Lungu) and her three younger sisters. She is the designated heir of the strange, secluded kingdom that her father constructed around them to protect his family from “the end of the world”. An extraordinary summer, when the strict rules that hold the family together, are beginning to break: in part due to the arrival of Martin, a German boy on a youth rehabilitation program, and also due to the local community’s participation in a TV competition for big prizes “Village Wonders”, presented by the mysterious Milly Catena (Bellucci).

Hovering mysteriously somewhere between dream and reality, stark and striking images portray the clash of two very different worlds, the traditional and the contemporary, resulting in a hypnotising presentation.
